Why tyre sales fell in 2025: figures and structural causes
1. A declining tyre market, but still significant
The decline recorded in 2025 is part of a longer trend. The passenger car tyre segment went from a peak of around 28.1 million units in 2018 to 24.5 million in 2025.
This decrease is due in particular to the growth of SUVs, which is changing the breakdown of sales, as well as to successive postponements of purchases observed during periods of inflation and strain on purchasing power.
Nevertheless, the market remains substantial. Every vehicle must maintain tyres that are compatible with its dimensions, weight, speed and operating conditions.
To prepare for their replacement, drivers can search for their car tyres by size or by vehicle and compare the models corresponding precisely to their type-approved tyre size.
The replacement can be delayed, but not indefinitely
Tyres are sometimes considered a deferred expense. When no treadwear indicator appears to have been reached and no damage is visible, some motorists choose to wait a few weeks or months.
However, the condition of the tyres directly affects:
- adhesion ;
- braking ;
- handling ;
- the drainage of the water ;
- energy consumption ;
- comfort ;
- the sound level.
Replacement must therefore be based on the actual condition of the tyre and not solely on the desire to defer the expense.
2. Motorists more attentive to their spending
The market downturn does not affect all product categories in the same way.
In the first half of 2025, sales of premium brands fell by 5.4 %. Their market share fell below the 50 % mark, to 48.4 %. At the same time, budget brands grew by 10.2 % and achieved a market share of 22.2 %.
Price is becoming a central criterion
Tyre replacement competes with many other car expenses:
- fuel or electric charge; ;
- assurance ;
- routine maintenance ;
- MOT test ;
- mechanical repairs ;
- Parking ;
- vehicle financing.
Facing these expenses, some drivers are abandoning a premium brand in favour of a more economical tyre.
This change does not necessarily mean they are looking for the lowest price without regard for quality. Above all, they want to identify the best balance between price, safety, longevity and actual usage.
The section dedicated to car tyre tests allows in particular for the comparison of ratings regarding driving on dry or wet roads, comfort, noise, wear and tear, and value for money.
