The Michelin CrossClimate is a tyre that has been granted the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snow Flake) winter certification owing to its excellent traction on snow and other winter surfaces. The tyre was introduced with the aim to cater to Europe's changing weather conditions and incorporates an effective meld of summer and winter technologies that results in a performance that is indicative of Michelin Total Performance. According to Michelin, the unique construction and tread pattern are the key elements that make the CrossClimate an excellent tyre. The tyre has two primary layers: the first layer comprises the outer tread; the second layer, which is just underneath the first one, reduces the heat transfer in the tyre. The tyre's distinctive V-shaped tread pattern and high-performance self-block 3D sipes give it an excellent dry handling ability and improved snow traction. The V-shaped tread blocks interlock at three different angles to provide an optimised claw-like grip in snowy conditions while the sipes boost traction and improve the braking performance of the tyre. The tyre rubber uses a specialised mix of compounds that gives it its excellent grip in both summer and winter weather conditions. The rubber also incorporates a high silica content under the tread which contributes to the tyre's low rolling resistance. The tyre rates at a 'C' for rolling resistance and 'A' for wet performance, making it a highly fuel-efficient tyre. On the noise emission/exterior noise ratings, the tyre has a single “wave” - the best rating that indicates a noise level that is at least 3dB below the accepted limit. However, the CrossClimate, despite its all-season compatibility, cannot be considered an all-climate tyre. Performance vehicles, in particular, will not be able to garner the full advantages of a summer or winter tyre from the CrossClimate. However, for regular passenger vehicle owners, the CrossClimate can be considered a viable option.
