The Michelin Alpin 5 is a premium winter touring tyre that replaces the Alpin A4. The tyre is geared towards compacts, mid-range and large saloons. When a study by VUFO concluded that 57% of road accidents occur on dry road surfaces, Michelin took this as an opportunity to improve the wet and dry performance of its winter tyres. The Michelin Alpin 5's tread pattern features deeper grooves and a 17% higher void ratio than the Alpin A4, which improves its snow and wet performance. Michelin's “Stabiligrip Technology”, which helps the tyre retain its overall rigidity, uses three-dimensional intersecting sipes to improve the rigidity of the tread blocks. With a 16% increase in the number of sipes in the Michelin Alpin 5, the tyre's stability is increased. The rubber in the Michelin Alpin 5 uses Michelin's fourth generation silica-based rubber compound, HelioCompound 4G. This contains a sunflower oil base that allows the tyre to retain its softness, even at low temperatures.
